Farm News, Herd Share Pickup: 7/1/2020

Hello beautiful peeps,

We will have QUAIL again at the Wytheville Farmer’s Market on Saturday. Quantities are very limited. They come in 16 ounce packages with four birds approximately 4 ounces each. Price is $20.00. We also have a few jars of of BLUEBERRY JAM still available.

The traffic pattern has returned to normal at the farmer’s market. We are back in our original position near the uncovered side exit.

Quail

The next batch of eggs is in the incubator. There are 84 eggs this time. That right — 84!! About three days into collecting eggs I realized that these eggs are produced by hens and roosters that are quite young. They have yet to prove their fertility. Even though we have many more eggs, we may end up with far fewer chicks. We shall see. That excellent hatch rate we had last time may be repeated — or not.

The previous 50 birds are doing very well and growing so fast. It’s odd to not have any in the brooder. But in a little over two weeks, that part will start all over again. Happy days!

Cows

Claire and Cloud were re-inseminated this past week. They came into heat again, indicating that the first round did not take. Violet may be pregnant. We have seen no signs of heat from her. We are not sure about Butter. We will be able to test soon. And if need be, do it all over again until we have success.

Wendell and Virginia are doing well, as is Luna. Safely back inside the fence, they have been content to eat grass and gulp down milk (Wendell and Virginia) a couple of times per day. Between the two of them, they go through four gallons of milk a day. Perhaps we indulge them too much. But I like to see big healthy calves. So we give them lots of milk from the moms.

Creamery

Scott is on the roof again today. I think he is nearly done with the really complex part. This particular section of the roof has another little roof on top of it where the attic stairs from one level join the attic of the other, higher level. I think he is on to the easier part now of just putting on the rest of the decking. After that, the metal roofing part begins. Charles will likely come over and give him a hand with that. It is safer that way and will go much quicker as well.

Garden

I finished the final two beds a few days ago. They contain culinary herbs. I have a 24 x 8 foot bed that has rosemary and thyme. There is another with cilantro and oregano. And the final one has parsley and basil. The rosemary, thyme and oregano plants will be moved to another location at the end of the season. They are perennials in our USDA planting zone and will need to be moved from the annual garden area to a more permanent location. I don’t know where right now. But I will think of something.

The sunflowers are so amazing. Many are over six feet tall now. I’m so excited about these plants. What a joy to just go out there and stare at them with wonder.

That’s it for farm news. Now on to the farmer’s market update.

Farmer’s Market

We will be at the Wytheville Farmer’s Market on Saturday 8 am to noon. The veggie vendors will be outside on the covered side. The season is coming into full swing. Come on out and check out what everybody has to offer.

Again, we will have QUAIL and BLUEBERRY JAM!! in very LIMITED Quantities!

Sorry, we are still out of ground goat and ground lamb but have ribs chops and loin chops. We are out of beef. It will be August before we have more. We are sold out of beef 1/4s and 1/2s and lambs.

Quail

The quail babies are not babies anymore. They have moved to the penthouse and are acclimating quite well. We refilled the breeder cages with the previous penthouse tenants. For the first time we have three full sets of five hens and one rooster. I only kept one of the original hens. All of the quail are various shades of brown except one. She is white. There are two in the penthouse. We shall see if they are roosters or hens. Maybe I will have one or two more white ones.

Calves

Scott spent much of yesterday beefing up the fencing arrangement down by the larger pond. Wendell has escaped twice before by himself by taking that route. A couple of days ago, Luna used it to escape. Scott got her back in the pasture. But later in the day I got two phone calls within minutes of each other from neighbors. The calves are out. This time it was Wendell and Virginia. They had gotten all the way to the road — and across the road in Virginia’s case. Scott quickly herded them back into the pasture. Today they are secure in the newly reinforced fencing.

Creamery

Scott is on the roof today — and yesterday — and the day before that — and the day before that . . . and so on. He keeps plugging away at it. We will get there.

Garden

The peppers are taking off finally. For a long time the plants didn’t seem to be catching on, but in the last few days, they are staring to fill out and grow taller. The tomatoes are also starting to fill out finally. The sunflowers now. . . They are going great guns. Some of them are over four feet high. They have grown a foot in the last week.

Orchard

The blueberries are just about done. The crows have discovered them and we are sharing. We are winding down with the blueberries and the blackberries are ramping up. Lots and lots of them are on the canes. Currently red, but soon to be deep purple. Anyone interested in seedless blackberry jam?

That’s it for farm news. Now on to the farmer’s market update.

Farm News, Herd Share Pickups: 6/16/2020

Hello beautiful peeps,

Farm news has good news and bad news. Quail losses and calf birth. We will have limited quantities of BLUEBERRY JAM at Wytheville Farmer’s Market on Saturday.

If you are looking for Herd Share pick up info, jump down the page here

Quail

The quail babies are doing great. We have 50 warmly housed in various brooders. The brooders keep them warm and safe until they grow their permanent feathers. That takes about two weeks.

The bad news is that a predator snagged four of our breeder quail over two days. We moved the surviving breeders in with the grower group on the penthouse level. Scott had to work on the quail hutch yet again. I believe all is well now. We shall see. Once we repopulate the breeder cages, we shall see.

Cows

I know the vest said that Buttercup had three more months before giving birth. Buy hey, everybody makes mistakes. It has been only two weeks and we now have yet another beautiful heifer calf. Virginia is gorgeous and the picture of health.

Creamery

The small cheese cave is humming along beautifully. Today I waxed two more wheel of Peaceful Heart Gold. In a couple of months that cheese will be available. The humidifier is working great. The hydrometer with a wireless remote app is not working. I haven’t had time to trouble shoot that yet. Too much going on. Such is life on the homestead.

Garden

We put supports up for the tomatoes and they look great. I wish you could see the sunflowers. Some of the are already over three feet high.

I picked a couple of sweet banana peppers. The cayenne peppers and jalapenos are coming on strong. The California Wonder bell peppers are going to take a bit longer. That’s a much larger pepper.

That’s it for farm news. Now on to the farmer’s market update.

This week’s podcast, “Life and Death on the Homestead” has the good news and more details on the quail predator situation. Sometimes life is hard here on the homestead. We deal with life and death every day. Having said that, there is a lot more good news than bad this week. New birth and lots of growth.

Farm News, Herd Share Pickups, Farmer’s Market: 6/10/2020

Hello beautiful peeps,

Farm news is the blueberries are ripening. We don’t have the quantity for farmer’s market, but look for them this Saturday in Wytheville. Greg will likely have them.

The Wytheville Farmer’s market information is farther down the page. You can skip there by clicking here. If you are looking for Herd Share pick up info, jump down the page here

Quail

The quail eggs hatched Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Out of 64 eggs, we got 52 quail chicks. That’s a fantastic 81% hatch rate for quail where 70% is the norm and 50% is not unusual.

Sheep and Lambs

The sheep and lambs were brought in for their second spring parasite check. We check just before lambing and right after. If they need assistance with worm control, we need to catch it quick — especially the lambs. Good news! Everyone is doing very well.

Creamery

The small cheese cave is humming along beautifully. I put two more wheels of Peaceful Heart Gold in there just this week. The humidifier was put in place today. Now I need hydrometer with a wireless remote app — it’s on the way.

Garden

I have a small sweet banana pepper already. It’s about 2 inches long. The bulk of the rest of the 72 pepper plants are blooming. The potato plants are surging. After the small mishap with the deer in the beans, they are recovering nicely. Still need to get my culinary herbs in the ground. And the celery is still awaiting its relocation to the outdoors. I just need a few more hours in the day and I would have that done.

That’s it for farm news. Now on to the farmer’s market update.

Farmer’s Market

Same, same here. Wytheville Farmer’s Market will be open on Saturday 8 am to noon, again allowing you inside to make your purchases and pre-order pickups. I believe that this Saturday the veggie vendors will be more numerous and outside on the covered side. And as I said above, look for those blueberry vendors. Strawberries also are in season right now.

We are in the same place as before. See you there.

You can pre-order with us. Call of send and email and I will get you set up. Find vendors on the Wytheville Farmer’s Market Facebook page. You will find our products listed there as well as on this page.

Farm News, Herd Share Pickups, Farmer’s Market: 6/3/2020

Hello beautiful peeps,

Farm news about the cheese cave. I’m ecstatic. And the usual animal updates — with a bit about the garden as well.

The Wytheville Farmer’s market information is farther down the page. You can skip there by clicking here. If you are looking for Herd Share pick up info, jump down the page here

Quail

The quail eggs are going into “lock down” on Friday. At that point, the incubator cannot be opened until three days after the first chick is born. I expect to hear the first peeps on Saturday, perhaps Sunday. Can’t wait. I love the cute little quail chicks.

Sheep and Lambs

The lambs are all born now. We had no issues. The first time in a very long time. No lambs died. No ewes died or had issues. No bottle lambs. Let’s pray their health continues. We will be checking their health in about a week looking for evidence of parasite overload. It can happen this time of year.

Cows

Artificial insemination was completed on Monday morning. Now we wait three weeks, hoping none of them come back into heat. If they do, we start the process all over again.

Creamery

The small cheese cave is up and running. We have transferred all of the cheese into the cave. Scott ordered a humidifier today. That piece needs to be in place as well. I am experimenting with creating natural rinds and that humidifier is crucial for my success.

Garden

How is your garden going? Scott and I transplanted all of our tomatoes and peppers into the garden. I grew about 50 tomatoes plants from seed. They are all paste tomatoes. I plan on making lots of tomato sauce, barbecue sauce, etc. There are 72 pepper plants. Yes, that’s right, 72. And six different varieties. I will be drying lots of peppers this year.

The beans got eaten on a bit by the deer. I closed a gate that I had open for the calves so they could eat the grass in the lower garden. But it also leaves a gap in the deer fencing. sighhhh.

That’s it for farm news. Now on to the farmer’s market update.

Farmer’s Market

This week’s podcast, “Reblochon Raw Milk Cheese is Coming!.” With the new cheese cave now available and the ability to add humidity, I can experiment with natural rind cheeses. It simply was not possible before. The cheese would become too dry and crack. I’m so excited about this opportunity.

Farm Updates, Herd Share Pick Ups, Farmers Market: 5/27/2020

Hello beautiful peeps,

Farm updates include some fun animal updates and cheese cave status. But the real info is the stuff I put in there about the cicadas.

The Wytheville Farmer’s market information is farther down the page. You can skip there by clicking here. If you are looking for Herd Share pick up info, jump down the page here

Quail

The quail chicks are enjoying their new home and doing well. They have grown from the size of my thumb to the size of my hand in three short weeks. In five more weeks they will be fully mature. They will only grow about another quarter of their current size. The current batch of 64 eggs in the incubator are doing fine as far as I can tell.

Sheep and Donkeys

The donkeys are keeping up with the lambs and getting scratches and hugs from me on a daily basis. One of the two ewes I talked about last week has given birth. These are the largest lambs ever born on our farm. She had twins that weighed 14.6 and 11.25 pounds. That’s over 25 pounds of lamb. She did fine though. Only one more to go. I suspect another week or more and she will deliver.

Goats

I am happy to report that the goats are still staying in their assigned paddock. It has been nearly two weeks and they are still in with the cows. They are happy and healthy.

Cows

Artificial insemination has started. During the physical exams that all of the cows received, we got confirmation that Buttercup is pregnant. However, she is only six months along. It will be August before she delivers that calf. The AI process will ensure that all of the cows are cycling together — except Buttercup. Perhaps next year we can get that straightened out.

Creamery

The special grout for the tile floor was picked up today by my wonderful hubby. The small cheese cave is about to be complete. And just in time. I have a new cheese that is currently drying at room temp that will need space to begin the aging process.

That’s it for the farm update. Now on to the farmer’s market update.

Farmer’s Market

Same, same here. Wytheville Farmer’s Market will be open on Saturday and again allowing you inside to make your purchases and pre-order pickups. Beginning with the first Saturday in June, the veggie vendors will be outside. The same stringent safety measures will be in place. A limited number of patrons will be allowed inside, keeping a safe distance everywhere. Unfortunately, still no browsing. You will enter on the covered side, follow the pathway that is laid out and exit on the uncovered side. We are in the same place as before. See you there.

Let’s Get Together

As always, we’d love to meet you in person.  You can find us at the Wytheville Farmers Market on Saturday from 8:00 am to Noon. Special procedures are in place for your health and safety, but come inside the building and see me.

As always, you may visit us at our dairy farm in Claudville, Virginia Tuesdays from 10 am to 12 noon and Saturday afternoons from 3 pm to 5 pm. Find out how we raise our animals and why you will love the taste of tradition that is inherent in all of our products. Herd share holders will be able to see up close how their cows are cared for and the cheese operation and where it is stored.
