Raw Milk Virginia Herd Shares – Traditional Nutrition
What and Why Herdshares
Herd shares in Virginia enable you to enjoy the freshest, most natural milk available. Unless you have a cow in your backyard, you need a herd share to enjoy raw milk in Virginia.**
It works like this: We do all the work – milking, grazing, doctoring, delivering etc. We do all this for a boarding fee of just $44.00 a month, per share. It’s that simple. Your boarding fee will be dictated by the amount of milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, and/or cream you wish to receive each week.
Our cows are milked seasonally. We start milking in the spring after momma has her calf or has “freshened”. And we stop milking or “dry her off” in the fall so she can properly prepare for her next calf. This ensures optimal health for the cows and their calves.
At the onset, you pay a one-time fee of $60 for your portion of the herd. You will need 4 jars per share if you receive milk. A set of 4 jars is $12 (that’s 4, ½ gal jars). You can provide your own, but they must be the same size and shape as the ones we use. The jars are for the rotation between your home and your pick up site. You will pick up milk and drop off empty clean jars. We drop off milk and pick up your empty jars to fill them again.
These are examples of monthly service and boarding fees:
1 share – $44.00 per month:
- 1 gallon of milk per week OR 2 quarts of yogurt during summer milking season
- 2 pounds of cheese and 1/2 pound of butter during summer and winter season (no active milking)
1.5 shares – $66.00 per month:
- 1.5 gallons of milk per week OR 3 quarts of yogurt during summer milking season
- 3 pounds of cheese and 3/4 pounds of butter during summer and winter season (no active milking)
2 shares – $88.00:
- 2 gallons of milk per week OR 4 quarts of yogurt during summer milking season
- 4 pounds of cheese and 1 pound of butter during summer and winter season (no active milking)
Startup costs include your herd purchase, jars, first months boarding fee and delivery. After that you settle into the routine Boarding Fee and delivery due at the beginning of each month.
